Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is one of Atlanta’s most storied historic estates. It was originally built between 1917 and 1920 as the private residence of Charles Howard Candler, the eldest son of Coca-Cola founder Asa Griggs Candler. Designed in the Gothic-Tudor Revival style by renowned architect Henry Hornbostel, the 27,000-square-foot mansion sits on more than 12 acres in the heart of Druid Hills and reflects the grandeur and cultural ambition of early 20th-century Atlanta.
After the Candler family era, the estate changed hands several times before being preserved by local advocates in the early 1970s. It was ultimately transformed into a nonprofit community arts center. Today, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center serves as a vibrant cultural hub, offering visual, literary, and performing arts education, as well as concerts, exhibitions, weddings, and community programming.
Beyond its architectural significance and rich Atlanta history, Callanwolde continues to function as a living creative landmark, welcoming thousands of artists, students, and guests each year to experience its gardens, galleries, and performances. The estate remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as one of the city’s most iconic venues for art and celebration.
